In this #AskanExpert series, we spoke with Dr. Eugenia (@dreugeniabonelli), a board-certified expert in aesthetic medicine and has her own practice at Wimpole Street. She shares her journey, insights on well-ageing, and passion for advanced skincare science while focusing on helping people age gracefully through subtle, personalised treatments that enhance natural beauty.
1. Hi Dr. Eugenia, it’s nice to meet you! Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m a board-certified doctor with a specialisation in aesthetic medicine and surgery. I’ve always had a passion for both science and artistry, which led me to pursue a career in aesthetics where I could blend the two. After earning my medical degree in Argentina, I moved to the UK to continue my surgical training, and I currently hold a senior fellowship in General Surgery at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
In addition to my clinical work, I have my own practice, where I focus on enhancing natural beauty through treatments like botulinum toxin, dermal fillers, and skin regeneration. I’m also passionate about sharing my knowledge with others, and I now train other practitioners in aesthetic medicine, helping them refine their skills and techniques.
I believe in helping people age gracefully by enhancing their natural features rather than drastically altering them. My approach is rooted in subtle, personalised treatments that promote long-term beauty and confidence. I'm also deeply interested in regenerative medicine, which allows me to incorporate advanced techniques to restore and rejuvenate the skin, supporting my patients' goals for natural, healthy ageing.
2. What got you interested in the field of aesthetics and surgery? We'd love to know about your journey.
From an early age, I was fascinated by both the precision of science and the creativity of artistry. This dual passion naturally led me toward the field of aesthetic medicine and surgery, where I could blend these two elements.
I realised how much impact subtle, well-executed treatments can have on a person's confidence and sense of self. Founding my own aesthetics clinic gave me the opportunity to apply both the scientific rigour I developed through surgery and the artistic approach I value in enhancing natural beauty. My journey has allowed me to explore regenerative medicine, which complements my belief in helping people age gracefully through personalised, long-term solutions. The ability to combine technical skill with the goal of restoring and refining one’s natural features is what continues to inspire me in this field.
3. Growing up, what skincare traditions or customs did you practise?
Growing up, I was surrounded by various skincare traditions that significantly shaped my appreciation for holistic beauty. In my family, there was a strong emphasis on natural ingredients and remedies. We often used simple, home-based treatments like olive oil for moisturising and honey as a face mask for its soothing properties.
Additionally, I remember my grandmother sharing her knowledge about the importance of sun protection and hydration, teaching me that healthy skin starts from within. These customs not only instilled in me the value of nurturing one’s skin but also sparked my interest in understanding the science behind effective skincare. This foundation ultimately influenced my journey into the field of aesthetic medicine, where I continue to advocate for natural and healthy approaches to skincare and beauty.
4. We love to hear that you have a passion for well ageing! What would be your three top tips to have your skin age well over time?
I’m glad to share my passion for well-ageing! Here are my three top tips for maintaining healthy, youthful skin over time:
Prioritise Sun Protection: One of the most significant factors in ageing skin is sun damage. I always recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily, even on cloudy days. This protects the skin from harmful UV rays, preventing premature ageing and maintaining skin elasticity.
Adopt a Hydration Routine: Keeping the skin well-hydrated is crucial. I advise incorporating a good moisturiser into your daily skincare routine and drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Additionally, using products with hyaluronic acid can help attract moisture to the skin, promoting a plump and youthful appearance.
Embrace a Balanced Diet and Lifestyle: Nutrition plays a vital role in skin health. A diet rich in antioxidants—think fruits, vegetables, nuts, and healthy fats—can combat oxidative stress and support skin rejuvenation. Coupled with regular exercise and adequate sleep, these lifestyle choices help the body regenerate and maintain healthy skin.
By following these tips, individuals can support their skin’s health and beauty as they age gracefully.
5. What are top 3 favourite ingredients for supporting well-ageing goals?
I have three favourite ingredients that I believe are particularly effective:
Retinoids: These vitamin A derivatives are renowned for their ability to promote cell turnover, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They help stimulate collagen production, making them a powerhouse for maintaining youthful skin.
Hyaluronic Acid: This incredible humectant holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water, making it excellent for hydration. It helps plump the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and giving the skin a more youthful, dewy glow.
Vitamin C: A powerful antioxidant, vitamin C helps protect the skin from environmental damage while also promoting collagen synthesis. It brightens the complexion, evens skin tone, and reduces the signs of ageing by combating free radicals.
6. In the world of skin ageing...which advances in ingredients, technologies or tools are you most excited about?
I am particularly excited about several advances that are making a significant impact:
Biologics and Growth Factors: The development of biologic agents, such as growth factors and peptides, has opened new avenues for skin rejuvenation. These ingredients work at a cellular level to promote healing, stimulate collagen production, and enhance skin elasticity. Their ability to target specific signs of ageing makes them a game-changer in aesthetic treatments.
Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN): NMN is gaining attention for its potential to enhance cellular energy production and improve skin health. As a precursor to NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide), NMN supports cellular repair and regeneration. Research suggests that NMN can help mitigate the effects of ageing at the cellular level, making it a promising ingredient for maintaining youthful skin.
AI and Skin Analysis Technology: The integration of artificial intelligence in skin analysis tools is transforming how we assess and treat skin ageing. These technologies can analyse skin conditions with remarkable accuracy, allowing for personalised treatment plans based on individual needs. This tailored approach ensures more effective outcomes and helps clients achieve their specific skin goals.
I believe that these advances not only enhance our understanding of skin ageing but also provide innovative solutions that empower individuals to age gracefully while maintaining their natural beauty.
7. Anything exciting coming up for you in the next few months?
Yes, I have several exciting initiatives on the horizon in the coming months! First, I’m launching a new series of workshops focused on advanced aesthetic techniques, where I’ll share my knowledge and experiences with other practitioners. These sessions aim to elevate skills in areas like injectables and skin regeneration, fostering a community of learning and collaboration with a special initiative that emphasises the importance of mental well-being in aesthetics.
Additionally, I am exploring the integration of new technologies and treatments into my clinic, particularly those that emphasise regenerative medicine and holistic approaches to skin health. This aligns with my passion for helping clients age gracefully and enhances the services I provide.
Lastly, I’m looking forward to attending some upcoming conferences in the aesthetic field, where I can connect with industry leaders and stay updated on the latest research and innovations. It’s an exciting time, and I’m eager to see how these developments will positively impact my practice and my patients!
