As the season changes and we transition from summer sun, humidity to the coolness of fall, the change in temperature, environment and humidity levels can impact how our skin looks and feels.
Fall for yourself again… as the season changes
Here are 10 tips to keep your skin calm, comfortable, hydrated and glowing this fall.
1. Go gentle with skin cleansing
Swap out your summer strong clarifying cleansers for a gentle and calming cleansing approach as fall begins. Fall is the time to introduce soft, gentle and calming cream cleansers suitable for all skins or gentle and hydrating cleansers (which can actually work all year round)
2. Add additional hydrators - Think mists and hydrating serums
Now that you have a good cleansing step add some additional hydration to your skin with mists, toners essence or serums. Whilst technically not a hydration serum we like the Pro Resilience Serum but it deliver the kind of hydration that lasts all day whilst other serums can make you skin feel thirsty after a few hours
3. Use richer moisturisers and don’t skip body lotion
With colder weather and lower humidity, Look for skin quenchers like glycerin, comforting oils and semi-occlusives like butters to replenish and keep your skin happy and supple.
4. Get more rest and sleep
As the days get shorter, get more rest that your body craves. Don’t skip on that all essential sleep that your body needs for.
5. Mood lifters
During this time of year, consider some feel-good tools like SAD lamps, the Pzizz app for better rest, a Bed of Nails for stress relief, or a dry brush ritual.
6. Add cellular renewal ingredients
Go slow and gentle on actives but add back your retinoid or exfoliant if you took a break over summer to help lift discolorations, increase cellular renewal and shift some of the summer sun damage and dark spots- it also helps perk dull skins.
7. Don’t skip SPF
UV rays are present all year round, rays that cause ageing and cancers so lets make SPF an all year round must in your daily routine. Find an SPF texture that you love and apply generously!
8. Lip balms are a must
The combination of dropping temperatures and lower humidity this time of year can wreak havoc on our delicate lips, leading to dryness, chapping, and discomfort. Lip balms act as a protective shield, locking in moisture.
9. Caution with over-exfoliation
Harsh winds, lower humidity, and indoor heating can make your skin more vulnerable to dryness and irritation. Exfoliating too frequently during this time can strip away essential oils and disrupt your skin's natural barrier. Instead, opt for a gentler exfoliation approach - look for enzyme exfoliating systems and opt for flash masks to lift skin dullness and discolourations. Oooh, a great tip here is to mix or layer your favourite exfoliator with a barrier supporting serum.
10. Get humidified
During this cosy season, you’re bound to be indoors for longer periods of time with the heater on (or maybe that's just me). Low humidity levels can degrade the skin’s natural moisture barrier, leading to flaking, cracking and peeling. So, it’s definitely wise to invest in a skin-friendly humidifier to boost the hydration of your living and working spaces.
Okay, one last bonus tip:
11. Remember the HOLY TRINITY
As you head into fall and winter remember the holy trinity to lock in moisture into the skin:
1) Humectants - think hydrators 2) Emollients - oils 3) Occlusives - think butters, these work together to keep the skin hydrated, soft and supple.
